Chennai City Information
Chennai formerly known as Madras is the capital city of Tamil Nadu state and is the fourth largest metro city in India.
Founded by Francis Day, an employee of the East India Company, Chennai was the first British major settlement in India.
Despite the strong British influence, Chennai retains its traditional Tamil Hindu culture and effectively blended it with the foreign influence.
Places of Interest
Fort St. George - It is the first British fort built by the British East India Company. It has a 20 feet thick wall and has the country's tallest flagstaff. is here, thought to be over 300 years old.
High court - It is an example of Indo Saracenic architecture and is one of the largest judicial complexes in the world. It is a red sand stone construction with ornamental decorations on the walls and minarets.
Marina Beach - It is the second longest beach in the World and runs to a length of 12 Km. It has Anna Park, named after the founder of D.M.K (Dravida Munnetta Kazhakam) Anna durai and the tomb of M.G. Ramachandran who was a film star and the charismatic Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Government Museum Complex - It has an exquisite collection of more than 2000 Indian bronzes and Amaravathi marbles.
Fort Museum - The Museum has the collections of the documents of Indian History.
St. Mary's Church - The church is the oldest masonry with three arched aisles and bomb-proof roof.
St. George's Cathedral - It is a white colonial church and is the headquarters of the churches of South India.
Basilica of San thome - This Cathedral has St. Thoma's body entombed inside.
Church of Our Lady of Expectation - The Church has about 130 granite steps and is believed that the Apostle St. Thomas was martyred while praying in front of a cross engraved in the natural stone base.
Parthasarathi Temple - It is one of the oldest temples in Madras built by Pallavas of 8th century and rebuilt by the Vijayanagar Kings of 11th century. The main deity is Sri Krishna.
Sri Kapaleswarar Temple - The temple is the ancient Siva temple having Dravidian temple sculpture and architecture. It has a magnificent 37 meter tall gopuram.
Guindy National Park - This is the countries only Wildlife Sanctuary within a city's limits. Raj Bhavan, the Governor's mansion, occupies one end of the park, and at the other is the beautiful forest campus of Chennai's famous Indian Institute of Technology.
Anna Zoological Park - The Park is the biggest in South Asia and has a superb collection of tropical mammals, birds and reptiles amongst others.
Snake Park - It has more than 40 species of common snakes of India apart from crocodiles, chameleons, monitor lizards and tortoises in their natural setting.
Crocodile Bank - This crocodile breeding and research centre is run by Romulus Whittaker and the bank has already produced more than 6,000 crocodiles. There is also a snake farm where anti - venom is produced.
Kishkintha - It is the first theme amusement park with exciting rides and attractions.
M G M Dizzy World - This amusement park is situated at Muttukkadu enroute to Mamallapuram.
DakshinaChitra - It is a unique Heritage village which offers an unforgettable and authentic insight into the lifestyles of the diverse people of South India.
MGR Film City - It has the film shooting facilities with several sets of artificial sceneries like forest, water falls, market place etc.
